Cranberry farming in the SW corner of Washington State has a more than 100-year history. A Massachusetts visitor observed the native berries growing in the marshes and was impressed with the area’s resemblance to Cape Cod. Convinced that the peat soil could be successfully adapted to the cultivation of commercial cranberries, a partnership of 4 entrepreneurs purchased more than 1600 acres of Peninsula land between 1872 and 1877 for as little as $1 an acre. Nearly 150 years later, the industry is thriving with Washington being one of the top producers in the country.  Visit the museum and gift shop to learn more, and take a walking tour of a working bog.

Founded in 1885, when the area was still part of Washington Territory, and now thought to be the oldest continuing retail business in the state, Jack’s Country Store maintains traditions of rural America. Our general mercantile is the real thing, a fact that becomes immediately evident to first-time visitors who marvel at the wood floors, rolling track ladders, enormous oak showcases, and a beautiful stained glass ceiling, all functional fixtures in the store.

“This store is so wonderful! Beautifully appointed stock, and knowledgeable friendly staff. Everything you’d want in an independent bookstore. Go buy a book, grab a drink, sit outside somewhere and enjoy the port while you read. I love this place.”  –S.W. on Facebook

“Knowledgeable, friendly and welcoming. A large selection of both new and used books all hand selected. Knows what everyone is looking for. And how could you not love a store where you are lovingly greeted by the bookstore dog, Scout?” –D.S. on Facebook
